In a historic and significant move, the União Israelita Porto Alegrense, located in the city of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, formally announced its affiliation to the Union of Reform Judaism. This decision represents a significant milestone for the local Jewish community, as it adopts the principles and values of Reform Judaism on a wider scale.
The synagogue, which has been a focal point for Jewish life in the region for over 110 years, embarked on a careful and deliberative process before making this union official. Having been introduced to the values of Reform Judaism by SIBRA (a local community already affiliated to UJR-AmLat) and with the hiring of Rabbi Pablo Schejtman, also from the Reform movement, the congregation decided to align itself with the possibility of fostering an inclusive and diverse Jewish life.
May this affiliation help in the promotion and development of a plural Judaism for the southern region of Brazil and for our entire Latin American region.
