This past Shabbat, Rabbi Kelita Cohen and rabbinical student Ida Katz visited the Sociedade Israelita do Ceará (SIC) in Fortaleza for a meaningful gathering centered on spirituality, community connection, and shared experiences.
During the visit, the community celebrated Kabbalat Shabbat, Havdalah, and Purim, bringing members together in moments of prayer, celebration, and communal life. The services were filled with emotion and significance, strengthening the sense of belonging and Jewish life in the region.
In addition to the liturgical moments, a meeting was held with community members and leaders, creating a space for dialogue and exchange about the challenges and opportunities of Jewish life in the area.
Ireland Oliveira, president of SIC, shared his gratitude:
“On behalf of SIC, we thank UJR for the initiative that gave us the joy of welcoming Rabbi Kelita and Ida to our community. The services were meaningful and moving. We had a productive meeting where experiences were shared. Their empathy and sensitivity deeply touched us, and we are grateful.”
The visit reaffirms UJR-AmLat’s commitment to strengthening Jewish communities in different regions by fostering connection, dialogue, and the living experience of progressive Judaism.
