Tashlich (from Hebrew, “to cast”) is one of the most meaningful customs of Rosh Hashanah. As we gather by the river, lake, or sea and throw breadcrumbs or small stones, we symbolize our desire to leave behind mistakes, guilt, and burdens that no longer belong to us. It is a simple gesture, yet deeply spiritual: it does not replace teshuvah (repentance) or prayers, but it helps us embody and feel in our hearts the movement of beginning the year lighter.
This Rosh Hashanah, the TaMar Porto Alegre group, made up of Reform Jewish youth seeking a vibrant communal life full of connections, came together to celebrate this ritual. The gathering was more than a moment of tradition: it was an opportunity to live Judaism in a meaningful way, sharing experiences, strengthening bonds, and reaffirming the collective desire to build a future filled with spirituality, solidarity, and community life.
May the example of TaMar Porto Alegre inspire other communities and youth groups to embrace the power of Tashlich: to release what weighs us down, make room for what truly matters, and renew our path into the new year — together.
