Zionist Congress Elections: A Decisive Moment for Liberal Judaism

By David Britva Beraha and Davi Bujarski

Every five years, Jews from around the world have a unique opportunity to shape the future of Israel and global Jewish communities through the elections for the World Zionist Congress. In 2025, these elections carry even greater weight, as extremists currently hold power and seek to push liberal Jews, women, LGBTQ+ Israelis, and ethnic minorities into second-class status.

The World Zionist Congress is not just a symbolic event. It oversees an annual budget of over one billion dollars allocated to various Jewish and Israeli causes. This means your vote directly influences funding for educational programs, pluralistic religious institutions, social projects, and community initiatives in Israel and throughout the Diaspora, via institutions like the Jewish Agency, the World Zionist Organization, and Keren Kayemet LeIsrael (KKL).

Among the core principles of liberal Judaism are a pluralistic, democratic, and inclusive State of Israel; freedom of religious choice and equality among Jewish denominations; support for liberal synagogues, schools, and youth movements; the rebuilding and resilience of Israel following October 7th; and the fight against antisemitism and support for Diaspora communities.

Recognizing the power of unity, Arzenu — representing Reform Judaism — and Mercaz — representing Conservative/Masorti Judaism — have formed a strategic alliance. Together, we represent the unified voice of non-Orthodox Judaism: a powerful coalition defending democratic and pluralistic values essential to Israel’s future.

Both parties have long advocated for funding of pluralistic Jewish streams in Israel and the Diaspora through the World Zionist Congress — a vital mission for the growth of our movements in Israel and globally. Our partnership strengthens this shared commitment to advancing genuine religious pluralism.

We already see the strength of liberal Judaism around the world: in the United States alone, Reform and Masorti slates gathered nearly 75,000 votes — almost one-third of the total — setting a historic record in both numbers and percentage.

Let’s make history in Brazil too: in this critical moment, as Israel faces security challenges on its borders, we must act to ensure that Israel remains a Jewish and democratic state. Our alliance represents the necessary unity between Reform and Conservative Jews to counter the growing influence of extremism and preserve Israel’s core democratic values.

Your participation in the upcoming elections is not just a right — it is a responsibility for the future of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
Vote for Arzenu and Mercaz. Vote for a democratic, pluralistic, and egalitarian Israel.
